Through MY Window — Learning to Hear Beyond Ourselves

Why human harmony requires listening, adjustment, and learning to hear beyond ourselves.

Companion to This Episode

Music teaches us something important about people.

In this Through MY Window reflection, I explore how harmony works — not just in music, but in human relationships. Using my grandson Caleb’s band experience as a starting point, I reflect on why disagreement, adjustment, listening, and self-awareness matter so much in families, communities, and conversations.

This reflection isn’t about becoming identical. It’s about learning how to hear beyond ourselves long enough to create something better together.

Through personal reflection, music, and the 3 Ps Clarity Method, I reflect on how human harmony often requires discomfort, patience, humility, and intentional practice.

☝️Here’s the Truth Check:

Sometimes the problem isn’t that someone else is “off-key.” Sometimes we’re struggling to hear anything except our own part.

💬 Let’s Talk 💬

  1. What’s a moment when you felt truly listened to — or realized you needed to listen differently yourself?

Was there a conversation, relationship, disagreement, or even a quiet moment that changed how you hear other people?

  2. And what do you think helps human beings move toward harmony instead of just louder noise?

I’d genuinely love to hear your perspective

If you choose to share, the life experiences you bring are deeply valued here. Reflections can be shared in the comments on the Learning to Hear Beyond Ourselves | American Together video on the American Together YouTube channel, or in our upcoming community space (coming soon).

🧭 Practice Challenge 🧭

This week, notice one conversation where your instinct is to immediately focus on what you want to say next.

Then pause.

Intentionally listen a little longer before speaking — not to silence yourself, but to practice hearing beyond your own part for a moment.

Sometimes understanding begins in the space we normally rush to fill.

💛 Episode Inspiration 💛

Part of the inspiration for this reflection came from attending a middle school spring concert band performance directed by Mr. Couch.

At one point, I learned he had taught all of the students the full 24-note version of Taps — and something about that stayed with me.

Music requires listening.
Adjustment.
Awareness.
Timing.
Space for other people.

Harmony doesn’t happen because everyone plays louder.
It happens because people learn to hear beyond themselves.

And honestly… that felt connected to a lot more than music.
