The true story behind Invisible Glue — and why noticing quiet goodness still matters.

Companion to This Episode

Invisible Glue started as a simple classroom activity in a second-grade classroom almost thirty years ago. But over time, it became something much bigger.

In this Through MY Window reflection, I share the real story behind the black “Invisible Glue” bottle I used with my students — and how it slowly taught me something important about human beings, emotional environments, and the quiet ways people hold each other together.

Because what we repeatedly notice shapes what starts to feel normal.

And in a world constantly rewarding outrage, fear, conflict, and humiliation… maybe part of staying emotionally healthy — and staying human — is intentionally noticing the quiet good that has always existed around us.

This isn’t about pretending problems aren’t real.

It’s about refusing to believe they’re the ONLY thing that’s real.

☝️Here’s the Truth Check:

What we repeatedly notice… slowly becomes what feels normal.

💬 Let’s Talk 💬

What’s a moment of “Invisible Glue” you’ve experienced recently?

Something small…
quiet…
human…
that reminded you people are still capable of goodness?

Sometimes the moments that shape us most aren’t dramatic or viral. They’re the everyday choices people make to comfort, notice, help, encourage, include, or simply show kindness when they didn’t have to.

Those moments matter more than we often realize.

If you choose to share, the life experiences you bring are deeply valued here. Reflections can be shared in the comments on The Story Behind Invisible Glue | American Together video on the American Together YouTube channel, or in our upcoming community space (coming soon).

🧭 Practice Challenge 🧭

This week, intentionally look for Invisible Glue.

Not the big heroic moments that everyone notices.
The smaller ones that usually pass quietly by:

  • A patient response.

  • A thoughtful gesture.

  • A moment of inclusion.

  • A small act of care.

  • Someone choosing kindness when they didn’t have to.

And if you notice one…

tell somebody.

Sometimes people don’t realize the impact their small actions have. Acknowledging those moments not only encourages the person who created them — it also trains us to notice the kinds of behaviors that quietly hold communities together.
