THROUGH MY WINDOW — The Danger of Getting Used to Things

A reflection on adaptation, curiosity, and how to tell the difference between understanding something and simply getting used to it.

Companion to This Episode

Human beings are remarkably good at adapting.

In many ways, that's one of our greatest strengths. Adaptation helps us survive difficult situations, navigate change, and learn from people whose experiences are very different from our own.

But after a conversation with a congressional staff member, I found myself wrestling with a question I couldn't quite shake: How do we know when we've truly come to understand something... and when we've simply gotten used to it?

In this Through MY Window reflection, I share a story about adapting to life in Morocco, the question that stayed with me after that meeting, and why curiosity may be one of the most important tools we have for seeing clearly. Because something feeling normal isn't always the same thing as understanding it—and it certainly isn't always the same thing as deciding it's healthy.

💬 Let’s Talk 💬

What's something you've seen become so normal that people barely notice it anymore?

Maybe it's something in your family, your workplace, your community, or even in our broader culture.

When you think about it now, do you believe that change has been healthy, unhealthy, or a little of both?

I'd genuinely be interested to hear how you see it and what helped you recognize it in the first place.

If you choose to share, the life experiences you bring are deeply valued here. Reflections can be shared in the comments on The Danger of Getting Used to Things | American Together video on the American Together YouTube channel, or in our upcoming community space (coming soon).

🧭 Practice Challenge 🧭

This week, pay attention to one thing that's become part of the background of your daily life.

Before deciding whether it's good or bad, pause and ask:

"When was the last time I really thought about this?"

Sometimes familiarity helps us adapt and move forward. Other times it can keep us from noticing things that deserve a second look.

Why this matters: The first step toward seeing clearly is often simply looking again.

💛 Episode Inspiration 💛

A conversation with a congressional staff member that left me wondering: When does adaptation help us grow—and when does it cause us to stop noticing things we should still question?
